Every year, Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War. On this day twenty-one years ago, the Indian Army retook every Indian station in Kargil that the Pakistani army had taken. Since then, people have set aside July 26th as Kargil Vijay Diwas each year to honor the warriors who gave their lives fighting for our cause.

Among the 527 gallant troops who gave their lives for the nation were Captain Vikram Batra, Lt Manoj Kumar Pandey, Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari, Major Vivek Gupta, and other individuals.

On this day, numerous parades and events are planned in remembrance of these warriors. The Kargil War Memorial in Drass is the location of the major ceremony.

History of this Day-

After Pakistani soldiers crossed the Line of Control (LoC) and entered the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir (now a part of the Union Territory of Ladakh), an armed confrontation broke out between India and Pakistan. This war, which lasted from May to July 1999, was called the Kargil War.

Events on the day-

At the Kargil War Memorial, Army Chief General Manoj Pande also lay a wreath in remembrance of the slain jawans, as did Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar.

General Anil Chauhan, the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), paid respects to the fallen Kargil War heroes by placing a wreath at the war memorial.
